The Rise of a Star: Jo Adell's Breakthrough Season
In the heart of Arizona, Tempe to be precise, a tale of resilience and determination unfolded last year. Jo Adell, the Angels' outfielder, faced challenges that threatened to derail his promising career. But, like a true champion, he refused to give up.
Adell, with his age-26 season upon him, leaned into his natural talent - the very reason he was picked 10th overall in the 2017 draft. And boy, did he deliver! The year 2025 witnessed his rise to the forefront of baseball.
Despite the Angels' struggles, Adell shone bright. He smashed a career-best 37 home runs, drove in 98 RBIs, and maintained a formidable .485 slugging percentage across 573 plate appearances. His power was on full display with four multi-homer games, three of which came post-June, as if the warmer weather ignited his determination.
But here's where it gets controversial...
The season started on a disappointing note for Adell. However, a sudden turnaround saw him dominate the league.
"Consistency was key," Adell shared, reflecting on his early-season quadriceps injury. "Once I hit the 300, 400 plate appearance mark, I started showcasing my true potential."
Drafted straight out of high school, Adell's journey to the majors was swift. He played 38 games during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, but the following years saw him bounce between Triple-A and the majors. His 2024 season with the Angels, though welcome, didn't quite meet expectations. But 2025 was different. It certified Adell's arrival as a regular center fielder for the first time in five years.
And this is the part most people miss...
Adell's quad injury during the season opener against the Chicago White Sox could have been a major setback. But he persevered, attributing the injury to a 'fluke' in the cold Chicago weather.
"I come in great shape every year, but this time it was different. Maybe I wasn't as loose as I thought, and the strain happened."
As the season progressed, Adell's performance improved. His batting average and OPS increased, with notable performances in May and June. In June alone, he hit 11 home runs and drove in 19 RBIs, showcasing his power and consistency.
Angels manager Kurt Suzuki believes Adell's best is yet to come. "I played with Jo when he was younger, and last year's performance was just the beginning. He's understanding himself more and stepping into a leadership role."
With Mike Trout likely returning to center field, Adell will transition back to his regular spot in right. And he's confident his speed is back, claiming he can still move at 28-29 feet per second.
The Future Looks Bright
Adell is excited to get back to his comfort zone in right field, knowing Mike Trout has his back in center. "I feel good about getting back to my comfort level and covering ground. Mike's excited too, and I know he'll lock it down in center."
In other news, right-hander Caden Dana is set to throw a bullpen session after recovering from mononucleosis. Dana, 22, has made 10 appearances for the Angels over the past two seasons, and his return is a boost for the team.
As for the closer role, manager Suzuki is keeping his cards close to his chest. With Kirby Yates, Jordan Romano, and Ben Joyce as candidates, the competition is fierce. Joyce is expected to start the season on the injured list, recovering from shoulder surgery. Yates and Romano bring a combined 211 saves to the table, making it a tough decision for Suzuki.
"Having three guys who can close is a luxury. We'll see how it plays out."
The Angels' 2025 season is shaping up to be an exciting one, and with Adell's continued development, the future looks bright.
