After an early exit from the Australian Open quarterfinals, Gauff's ranking took a hit, dropping her to the No. 5 spot globally. However, the opening WTA 1000 tournament of the year presented an opportunity for redemption.
Amanda Anisimova, ranked No. 4 at the time, was the defending champion in Doha. But with a large number of points to defend, her early exit in the second round caused her ranking to drop by two spots. This opened the door for Gauff's return to the top.
Gauff, who also received a first-round bye, suffered a shocking defeat in the second round to Elisabetta Cocciaretto. Despite not gaining any points this week, Gauff's path to the top-4 was cleared by the defending champion's early departure.
